The #MeToo tag

I've been reading a lot based around the #MeToo movement that is going around. Emotional is one word I have to describe it.

The Me Too movement is a movement against sexual harassment and sexual assault. In October 2017 #MeToo spread virally as a hashtag that was used on social media to demonstrate the commonness of sexual assault and harassment, in particular in the workplace. Following the sexual misconduct allegations against Harvey Weinstein, Tarana Burke, who is an American social activist and community organiser started using the phrase "Me Too" in 2006. This was later made popular by American actress Alyssa Milano on Twitter in 2017, where she and Michael Baker encouraged victims of sexual harassment to tweet about it, in order to "give people a sense of the magnitude of the problem".

One that really stuck with me was from a blog called 'I Am Begging My Mother Not To Read This Blog', which is an ironic name for the post because most people do not want to tell anyone about their abuse especially their parents. The blog post titled 'me,too' talks about the time the author got sexually abused and how it made her feel. It ends by saying "Are we hurting enough for something to change this time? Is this enough for you to believe me?" a fitting ending for such a hard-hitting piece.

This movement I find so fitting towards my radio documentary because it shows the sheer amount of sexual abuse that happens towards multiple different people, not just in care but out of care too. Social media has become a good tool in telling your story and being heard. Even though a lot of hatred is all over social media and horrible things happen because of it, it also can stem positivity and empower people to encourage others, help others and spread the word.

Through this, I have come to the conclusion of what I want my aim of the documentary to be: to encourage people to share their story, to show people they are not alone, to show people that there are people out there who can help and support them and that it isn't just 'a little secret'.
